On July 2012, the local government of Cagayan de Oro officially launched this year’s Kagay-an Festival with the theme: “CdeO, back on our feet and moving forward.” Mayor Vicente Emano and Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas, who is the overall chairperson of the Kagay-an Festival, stated that aside from honoring St. Augustine, the local government also aims to make the festival worth attending by providing entertainment to Kagay-anons, especially to those who were affected by typhoon “Sendong” last year.

Traditionally, the Kagay-an Festival is celebrated through seven core events that run until the last week of August. These events are the search for Ms. Kagay-an 2012, P.E. Rhythmic Dance Competition, Kagay-an Festival Cultural Street Dancing Competition, Kagay-an Pyro Festival, Kagay-an Festival Parade-Civic Military and Golden Float, Fluvial Procession and Floral Offering, and Mass Halad. This year, the festival committee added two more events, the Kagay-an Festival Marathon 2012 and the Agro-Industrial Fair, Rodeo and Horse Show.
Councilor Adrian Barba hopes that the P.E. Rhythmic Dance Competition would land a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. He is expecting around 10,000 participants to join the competition. Barba also stated that at least 10 schools have already listed to join the competition, wherein the committee requires 1,000 participants per school. A great promise for an event that will be full of merriment.
The Kagay-an Festival Marathon 2012 was held on August 19, where winners took home Php 196,800 total worth of cash prizes. On the other hand, the Agro-Industrial Fair officially started on August 15 and will end on August 27. Its goal is to boost Cagayan de Oro’s agriculture sector. During the event, you can see and purchase agricultural products displayed by neighboring barangays and participate in other activities that you will surely enjoy.
There are certainly more interesting and fun activities that you, your family, and your friends would surely enjoy when you visit Cagayan de Oro today!
