The Vatican Palace announced earlier this year that Blessed Pedro Calungsod will be canonized on October 21, 2012 at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
Blessed Calungsod was said to be born in 1654 in Visayas. Blessed Calungsod was trained by the Jesuits. He learned how to read and write, mastered catechism, and even deliver discourses in Visayan, Spanish, and Chamorro.
Blessed Calungsod is considered a Filipino Catholic martyr. He was among the first to serve on a mission to the Ladrones Islands in the Western Pacific, Marianas that was organized by Fr. Diego de San Vitores. Because of their mission to catechize and baptize the natives, Fr. Diego and Blessed Calungsod, who was only 17 years old then, were speared by two villagers in Tumhon, Guam on April 2, 1672.
The Roman Catholic Church deemed Blessed Calungsod’s martyrdom “In Odium Fidei,” or In Hatred of the Faith that refers to the religious persecution endured by a person in evangelization.

Blessed Calungsod was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000. With the canonization ceremony drawing nearer, the city of Cebu is now conducting activities to celebrate the life of Blessed Calungsod.
“If you could come please be with us in Rome, but if because of your very important work you could not be in Rome, please be with us in Cebu on November 30, for the Thanksgiving Mass. That day as a nation we will thank the Lord for this new saint,” Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president and Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma stated in an interview.
The Cebuano missionary will be the second Filipino saint after Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila.
